Key Points About Forex Swap Rates

What Are Forex Swap Rates?

In forex trading, a swap rate—also known as rollover interest—is the net interest earned or paid when a trading position is held overnight. This occurs because trading currencies involves borrowing one currency to buy another.

When a position is kept open beyond the daily rollover time (usually midnight server time), a swap charge is applied based on the interest rates of the two currencies in the pair. For example, when trading EUR/USD, you are effectively borrowing US dollars to buy euros. You may earn interest on the currency you hold and pay interest on the currency you borrow.

The final swap value depends on the difference between the interest rates of the two currencies. If the difference is positive, you may earn a swap; if negative, you may incur a cost. It’s important to note that borrowing and deposit rates differ, which is why swap rates vary between long and short positions on the same currency pair.

How Does a Forex Swap Work?

When you open a forex position, the trade typically settles within two business days in the spot market. However, if you keep the position open overnight, it is automatically rolled over to the next day, and the settlement date is extended.

During this rollover process, the currencies involved are effectively borrowed and lent in the interbank market. Based on the applicable interest rates, a swap charge (or credit) is applied to your trading account.

Your broker then reflects this cost or benefit directly in your account, depending on the interest rate difference between the two currencies.

There are two common ways a swap may be handled:

  • The swap amount is either credited or debited to your account while your position remains open at the same price
  • The position is automatically adjusted and re-opened at a new price that reflects the swap value and updated settlement date

Importance of Swap Charges in Forex Trading

Swap charges play a key role for traders who hold positions over longer periods. This includes swing traders, position traders, and investors using hedging strategies. Traders dealing with highly volatile markets or holding positions over weekends and holidays should also consider swap rates as part of their overall trading plan.

For carry traders, swap rates are central to their strategy, as they aim to benefit from the interest rate difference between two currencies. Understanding swap charges helps in identifying opportunities where holding a position overnight can generate additional returns.

Swap rates are also important when applying hedging techniques. For example, a trader may open an opposite position to manage risk without closing the original trade—commonly known as a hedging strategy.

Efficient pricing and competitive swap rates can help reduce the cost of maintaining such positions. Trading platforms support these strategies, allowing traders to manage risk more effectively while keeping positions open.
